IMPORTANT: see README.TXT, in the zfax\SYSTEM directory, for the very latest notes on this release of Zetafax.
Welcome. This short document is intended for the network administrator, or other person in charge of installing and managing the Zetafax server. It gives a brief introduction to how to configure and run the server, and how to install additional workstations. Full information about configuring Zetafax is given in the Zetafax Configuration program's online help system which can be found via the Manage Zetafax Troubleshooting icon, and in the User Guide.
To start the Zetafax server simply double-click on its icon in Program Manager. This program is run in the background of whichever PC has the fax card or fax modem.
You will see a few messages displayed as the server programs start - this takes a few seconds. Menu choices on the server program allow you to shutdown or restart the server, or display a frozen list of all logged messages from the server. You can minimise the server program to an icon.
On Windows NT or Windows 2000 the Zetafax server can also be run in the background as a service. This allows you to log out on the computer without affecting the Zetafax server. To start and stop the service, or set it to start automatically, use the "Services" icon in the Windows Control Panel.
We recommend that you set the logon account for the Zetafax Server service to an Administrator account, to ensure correct access to network printers and directories. This is also set with the "Startup" option in the Control panel "Services" dialog.
Installing the server also sets up that PC as a Zetafax workstation. Details of how to set up additional workstations are given below.
The SETUP program is used to configure the system for a CLASS 1 or CLASS 2 compatible fax modem. Add a new device, selecting the appropriate modem from the list of supported devices, then restart the Zetafax server.
The Zetafax server running on Windows NT or Windows 2000 also supports Brooktrout and Gammafax intelligent fax boards. If you have these boards then please read the README.WRI file in the zfax\SERVER\BTROUT or zfax\SERVER\GAMMAFAX directories for installation instructions.
If you want to print received or sent faxes automatically then you should configure the server printing settings using the Zetafax Configuration program (ZFSETUP) - the printer to use and which faxes get printed can be set using the "Server settings" dialog box in ZFSETUP.
The Zetafax Configuration program is also used to create Zetafax user accounts. All users must have access to the directory where you installed the Zetafax server files. You can restrict access if required for additional security - see the Softwarre Guide for full details.
To set up a new workstation run the zfax\SYSTEM\WKSETUP program on that PC, and choose the "install client" option. This must be done on any PC which needs to run the Zetafax client, as well as creating an account for the user on the server (as described above).
The Zetafax E-mail Gateway allow faxes to be sent and received using e-mail clients on Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes, cc:Mail and Novell Groupwise. This is installed separately after the Zetafax server software has been installed and configured. Users have the choice of using the Zetafax client, their e-mail client, or both to submit faxes for sending. Progress can be monitored using the Zetafax client or, with Exchange, from within Microsoft Outlook.
For new installations we recommend that you install the Zetafax server and check that faxes can be sent and received correctly using the Zetafax client software before installing the e-mail gateway. This simplifies the installation and learning processes.
Further details are given in the README.WRI file in the E-mail Gateway installation.
